Oklahoma City residents are bracing for a potentially severe ice storm forecast to impact the metro area over the next 48 hours. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather warning as temperatures are expected to drop significantly.

City crews have begun pre-treating major roadways with salt and sand as part of standard winter weather preparations. Public Works officials are coordinating with state transportation departments to ensure critical routes remain accessible.

Local utility companies report they are monitoring weather conditions closely and have crews positioned to respond to potential power outages. Ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs typically creates the greatest risk for electrical service disruptions during winter storms.

The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management has activated its Emergency Operations Center to coordinate with local jurisdictions. Emergency management officials are working with municipal leaders across the metro to assess resource availability and response capabilities.

Residents should prepare emergency supply kits including non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, and necessary medications. Officials recommend having supplies for at least 72 hours in case of extended power outages or impassable roads.

Previous ice storms in central Oklahoma have resulted in widespread power outages, hazardous driving conditions, and temporary closures of schools and businesses. The severity of impacts typically depends on ice accumulation amounts and wind conditions during the storm.
